Your Guide to Open Home Etiquette: Do’s and Don’ts for Buyers
I spend many hours inspecting homes on behalf of buyers and believe me, I’ve seen it all when it comes to what buyers get up to at open homes!
Open homes are a fantastic chance for buyers to explore properties and for sellers to showcase their space. They can be exciting but they also come with a few unspoken rules (and some plain common sense).
Shoes Off, Please
Always be prepared to remove your shoes at the door, especially if there’s new carpet or polished floors.
Hands Off the Furniture
As tempting as it might be, resist the urge to shift furniture, artwork, or décor. Respect the space as it’s set up it’s someone’s home, not a showroom to rearrange.
Check Cupboards Respectfully
It’s natural to want to check cupboards or drawers, but always ask the agent first. And remember browsing storage is fine, snacking from the fridge is definitely not (don’t laugh it happens)
Bedrooms Are Private
It’s fine to assess room size but lying on beds or snuggling under blankets? A definite no.
Bathrooms Are Off Limits , Mostly
Don’t use the bathroom during an open home it’s considered disrespectful to the sellers. If it’s truly urgent, always ask the agent first.
Watch the Kids
Kids can make open homes challenging and sometimes a bit risky. Pools, in particular, can be incredibly tempting, so always keep a close eye to avoid unexpected (and soggy) surprises!
By following a few simple etiquette rules, you’ll leave a great impression and make your property search smoother and more successful.
